Pyrite "Sun" Sparta, Illinois. Weighs:1.3 oz(37 grams) Diameter:2"(5cm) Pyrite suns are formed in the shale layer immediately above the coal layer in the region of Sparta Illinois. Their shape is unique to this deposit and many theories exist to explain them but we can only speculate. My theory is they were algae colonies that after being buried and decomposing left voids that allowing the pyrite a place to form one of the most spectacular and beautiful forms of pyrite.
